Mister Chorister – You’re Not Listening

Mister Chorister’s song “You’re Not Listening” turns the annoyance at being ignored into a tense alternative rock piece which depicts the conflict occurring within one’s own mind. The track opens with a strong rhythm, atmospheric production, guitar sounds influenced by grunge and a bright keyboard melody before moving on to a quieter first verse. This shift at once gives the impression of pressure and relief. As the song progresses, the arrangement becomes more urgent, showing the difficulty of dealing with thoughts and emotions that have been pushed aside.

The song began with a sense of frustration arising from the feeling that a colleague was not listening, but the act of writing altered that viewpoint. Instead of focusing on oneself, the question then turned to whether the other person might also feel as if they were not being heard, which in turn led to a more profound interpretation: maybe the one who is being ignored is actually oneself. It is this idea that creates the psychological tension in “You’re Not Listening”, since fear, grief, emotional suppression and communication become part of an internal dialogue. The growing urgency in the vocals strengthens the impression that one’s thoughts become more difficult to ignore.

The arrangement includes a great deal of detail: a warbling and surging pad is always there, and during the quieter sections a sliding bass produces an unstable undercurrent. In the choruses a more steady 16th-note bass pattern is introduced, which gives the transition from tension to release a greater sense of determination. In the second verse an eerie, grunge-influenced guitar phrase is added, together with grand piano chords that give the music a cinematic quality. The guitar solos also have a narrative significance, the first solo showing a state of confrontation and the later solo illustrating the difficult nature of the process of breaking free.

The last section gives the song its most definite feeling of release. Following the intensity of the final chorus and the seven-part vocal harmony, the arrangement suddenly takes on an intimate character, consisting only of acoustic guitar, a single clean vocal and the continuing warbling pad. The line “It’s never too late” presents the final thought before the television static is switched off and then silence sets in. This kind of ending provides the song with a powerful conclusion: the noise which has been the main feature of the piece is now entirely absent. Although “You’re Not Listening” leaves its central conflict unresolved in a simple way, the final silence does indicate a moment of awareness, intent and release.
