FORGIVEN FOR THE LAST TIME – EXZENYA
Exzenya’s “Forgiven for the Last Time” is a very sparse piano and voice ballad about realising that you have to forgive yourself first. It starts off with a very tense, very intimate exchange: a trembling voice, locked eyes and the sense that something is about to be said which is irrevocable. Rather than looking at the other person and blaming them, the song is very much looking inwards. The fundamental realisation is very straightforward and utterly unemotional: it’s her who has to forgive herself.
The lyrics are about someone who stayed in a toxic relationship, who believed the lies and who allowed their family to believe the same lies. There’s a very direct expression of regret in “I chose to stay when long ago I should’ve left” and the image of a web is used to describe the process of untangling what had happened. Forgiveness is not something you get as a reward for the person who has done you harm. It’s a decision you make for yourself and that’s where the healing begins.
Piano and lead vocal are the driving force of the arrangement, at a steady 86 BPM. The exposed sound allows the vocal and the story to stay front and centre. The emotional arc is very gradual indeed, starting off quite fragile and then gradually moving into a place of tentative self-forgiveness before settling into a state of calm reclamation. There’s no shout at the end, the power is in the restraint and the authenticity of the words. The arrangement is very much about the internal change that’s occurring in the narrator.

“Forgiven for the Last Time” brings its emotional arc to a close with a quiet form of resolution. It doesn’t end with the relationship and the ex as the victor. The resolution is in the act of no longer running from oneself. The sparse piano and voice arrangement is perfect for that inward focus and the song moves from regret to self-forgiveness as it draws to a close.
