Magdi Aboul-Kheir – Replicant Dreams

Replicant Dreams, an album consisting of nine tracks, sets its scene in the realm of science fiction and makes use of the visual imagination of the 1980s. The world it presents includes spaceships, Light Cycles, cyborgs and androids, but these elements do more than merely act as decorations; they help to create the atmosphere for music which features memorable melodies, propulsive grooves and instances of true emotion.

A prominent feature of the album is the way it shifts among various musical styles. Synthwave is combined with orchestral parts and the mood can move from pulsating to atmospheric and from epic to romantic. It is precisely these changes that give the record its diverse character, since each track can imply a different setting within the overall science-fiction world.

A great deal of nostalgia is present in this album, but it doesn’t stick firmly to one particular era. Instead, its retro-futuristic style looks to the science fiction of the 1980s while at the same time keeping a modern identity. The outcome is a work in which melody plays an important role in guiding the listener through its various moods, enabling them to go from one imagined setting to another without breaking the connection between the tracks.

The appeal of the album is based on the contrast between grandeur and intimacy; although it features cinematic and futuristic imagery which implies vast worlds, the romantic and emotional sections make the experience more personal. By combining atmospheric sections with energetic ones and pairing epic ideas with milder romantic moods, Replicant Dreams provides a great deal of variety within its main concept. The nine tracks act as separate glimpses of the same imagined universe, each presenting a different view of its retro-futuristic world.
