SERAh – GOING NOWHERE

There’s a certain frustration in wanting to make progress yet still ending up in the same spot. On “Going Nowhere”, SERAh examines that contradiction; the single, which is her debut and centered on stagnation, surrender, and the sensation of pursuing something that never quite arrives within reach, has a dark and reflective atmosphere that at once puts the listener right into the song’s main idea and produces a mood which is more reflective than confrontational.

Instead of viewing surrender as a sign of defeat, SERAh assigns it a more complex meaning. The song ‘Going Nowhere’ points out that it can at times seem oddly peaceful to stay within a familiar pattern, even though that pattern is in fact blocking change. This tension is what makes the song so compelling. The listener ends up in a state that is somewhere between resignation and desire, neither emotion entirely overcoming the other. The result is a sense of uncertainty which is intended and allows the piece to have space to unfold.

This darker melodic bass base supports the viewpoint without making it disappear. SERAh achieves this by combining aspects of melodic dubstep, melodic trap, and cinematic scoring, thus creating a broad background for the topic in question. However, the main impression is derived from the emotional situation being depicted: the sense of repetition, the allure of giving up the struggle, and the continuing awareness that something is still out of reach.

The song ‘Going Nowhere’ also shows SERAh’s desire to discover beauty in more sombre topics. Rather than looking for a triumphant conclusion, it remains with its uncertainty and enables the listener to consider the questions it poses. This decision gives the single an interesting feeling of honesty. When acting as an introduction to SERAh, it illustrates an artist who is interested in transforming difficult experiences into something immersive, reflective and strikingly atmospheric.
