WATCH ME DIE INSIDE – FANTASY GIRL (COVER)

‘Fantasy Girl’ is a work in which Watch Me Die Inside takes a commonplace expression of desire and turns it into an examination of the complex psychology involved in attraction. The cover draws focus to the area between true feeling and the imagined certainty, looking at how easily desire can become interwoven with projection; an encounter can assume the importance of destiny, while the person at the heart of that attraction is shaped by expectations that may be much stronger in the admirer’s mind than in reality.

It is this distinction which provides the song with its main tension. A person can enter into someone else’s mind as a promise without in any way having made that promise. The woman who is at the heart of “Fantasy Girl” is therefore not portrayed as the illusion; rather, it is the viewpoint of the one who believes themselves to have a full understanding of her that is illusory. She has her own life, her own voice and her own freedom, and these qualities exist wholly on their own, independent of the expectations that are placed on her. The outcome is a point of view that goes against the idea that strong desire necessarily implies true recognition.

The cover also looks at the way longing can act as a kind of emotional escape. Wanting someone else can lead to the creation of an imagined space in which something that is missing appears to be able to be regained. However, when that imagined possibility is taken for an actual relationship, tenderness can end up being inseparable from self-deception. “Fantasy Girl” keeps these two aspects together and allows the emotional uncertainty to stay rather than giving a simple solution. The desire is not rejected and is not regarded as clear evidence of a connection.

What gives the interpretation authority is the question it raises. The song does not reject desire, nor does it regard desire as enough to prove that another person has been truly understood; instead, “Fantasy Girl” invites listeners to think about the distinction between wanting someone and giving them the freedom to exist outside of that desire. It thus becomes a reflection on projection, romantic expectation, and the uncomfortable gap between the person we see and the person we imagine, leaving the listener to face how easily longing can alter our perception of another person.
